Thanks to its natural beauty, stable internet and strong economy, a growing number of remote workers and digital nomads are discovering Costa Rica as their new favorite destination.  While they’re eager to see active volcanoes, tropical beaches and experience world-class eco-tourism, securing a rental car to get around the country has become a headache for some. There is no shortage of testimonials online about opaque pricing and unfulfilled reservations, leaving travelers stranded at the last minute.  Let’s dive into the reasons for this persistent issue of the lack of car rentals in Costa Rica.

Options for Getting Around Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a highly functional bus system but COVID has made road trips by car the preferred method of travel for most tourists.  You can go wherever you want, on your schedule, with less exposure to other travelers. If you’re planning on staying in Costa Rica short term or for the long haul, renting a car is a no-brainer for maximum convenience and access to the country’s most beautiful and remote destinations.

The Basics of Renting a Car in Costa Rica

In order to rent a car in Costa Rica, you will need your original passport, ID, a valid tourist visa stamp, and a valid original driver’s license from your home country. If you’re from the United States, you can definitely drive in Costa Rica with a US driver’s license. An international driver’s license is not required in Costa Rica for North Americans (Americans and Canadians) and most countries in general, as long as your license is in Roman script. If you’re visiting from Europe, Costa Rica drives on the right hand side of the road, the same side of the road as the USA and Canada. We recommend studying the Spanish version of your home country’s transit signals, like Yield (ceda el paso), No U turns (no virar en U), No estacionar (no parking), Alto (Stop), and so on to be extra prepared.

How COVID Changed Everything

Rental car companies are everywhere in Costa Rica, with more popping up all over the country every year. Since the pandemic, finding an available car has become a logistical nightmare even with advanced planning.  When COVID hit and the Costa Rican borders closed, tourism diminished to negligible levels.  This left car rental companies with parking lots full of cars and no demand.  Most companies responded to the lack of demand for rental cars by selling their inventory both locally and internationally.

When the lifting of COVID restrictions gave the tourism industry a much needed boost, car rental companies tried to accommodate the increase in demand but they could not buy any new cars because of problems with supply chains and semiconductors.
It’s no secret that the supply chain issues are complex and will take years to untangle.
At GoRemote Costa Rica, we never sold our cars because we were able to rent them to local companies for corporate use.
We have our own fleet of well-maintained newer model cars, ready for you to rent.
